You still need to check prices when you’re offline
When you’re travelling, you might need to check a price before you’ve sorted out mobile data or found Wi-Fi. We wanted Flexchange to be useful then too.
It keeps the last downloaded rates on your phone and shows when they were updated. You can still compare a price, and you know how old the rate is.
We’re two friends building Flexchange together, across product, backend and iOS.
How it got here
- Now
We’re continuing to work on rate alerts, subscriptions and the backend. The everyday job stays simple: open the app and compare the currencies you need.
- More tools
We added calculators for doing the maths alongside a conversion, and charts for looking at how exchange rates have changed.
- Offline
We saved rates on the phone and added update times so people could use the app without a connection.
- Comparison
We brought multiple base currencies onto one screen so you don’t have to keep switching between separate conversions.
Keeping rates available
We keep a local copy of the exchange rates instead of making every conversion depend on a fresh request. That’s what lets the app keep working when the connection drops.
We use Firebase and Firestore for the backend data and purchase status. We also built rate alerts so people can ask to be notified rather than keep checking the app.
